What Are the Computer Parts That Make Up Your Device?

Understanding all of the computer parts that make up your device may seem overwhelming. However, learning about computer hardware not only leaves you more informed, but capable of identifying and resolving technical issues that might occur throughout its life.

Below, we’re going to walk you through the core computer parts that you’ll find in your average computer case. By the end, you’ll understand where each is found and what function it serves in your device.

The Essential Computer Parts

The Motherboard

This is the big circuit board that powers and holds the computer together. It is where all of the component connectors are located and allows those components to receive power and communicate. Motherboards are relatively affordable and vary in size and power depending on your personal needs.

The motherboard mounts onto the side of your computer case in a desktop, or is found underneath the keyboard in a laptop

The Central Processing Unit (CPU)

The CPU is one of the smallest, yet most important components found in your computer. It is the brain of your computer and is capable of making millions of calculations to run hardware and software programs.

It’s a delicate unit that snaps into a specified location on the motherboard. Some computers will also have a heat sink installed on top of it to make sure it stays at an optimal temperature. CPUs are not the most expensive part of your computer but can get costly as you increase core size and processing speed.

Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) / Video Card

The GPU easily snaps into one of the few expansion slots found on the motherboard. You’ll also need to pop out one of the bay ports on the computer case to make room for HDMI and USB ports.

The GPU is responsible for processing and rendering image data. These processes are too intensive to share with the CPU, so the GPU is a device made to handle these tasks on its own. Card sizes increase proportionately with power, so be sure that your card is compatible with your motherboard and case size.

Power Supply Unit (PSU)

The PSU is responsible for regulating the AC current from the wall into direct currents for each computer part. Most units automatically regulate these processes, but some have a manual voltage selection.

The PSU is a larger box that doesn’t plug into the motherboard itself. Rather, it will come with pin cables that attach to all of your internal computer parts once they’re in place.

Hard Drive

The hard drive is where all of your data, programs, photos, music, etc. are stored. All of the stored information is read from this drive and provides a means of processing it. This is not to be confused with random access memory (RAM), which stores working data from currently running programs.

All computers require both sufficient hard drive and RAM sizes to store and read data quickly. Solid state drives are a form of storage that continues to improve in cost and provides near instant data processing time.
