“Why is My Computer Slow and Freezing?” Take Care of Your PC with These Tips and Tricks

Whether you’re trying to get work done or you just want to enjoy a night of videogames, nothing’s more frustrating than a computer that’s slow and freezing all the time. There are a few different reasons this may happen, but ultimately, the best thing you can do to prevent it is by taking care of your computer.

In this article, we’ll give you a few of our maintenance tips for ensuring your computer performs optimally for as long as possible.

Don’t Leave Your Computer Running Overnight

If you’re looking to save some time in the morning, you may decide it’s not important to turn your computer off before going to bed. This is a mistake. The actual hours you turn your computer off don’t matter: you can turn it off while you’re at work, or during the day if you’re a night owl.

However, it is important to regularly turn your computer off and then turn it back on again. This allows for what’s known as a “boot” or “reboot”. Essentially, your computer will be able to organize any installations, deletions, or software updates that it can’t process during the day.

This may seem like a small thing, but letting your computer perform organizational tasks when it starts is important. It will often check for any errors that may be in your hard drive.

Scan Drive or Check Disk

If you want to see the operations a PC runs when it starts, perform a “scan drive” or “check disk”. This allows your computer to check a specific hard drive. If there’s a hard drive issue, your computer may then be able to fix it.

Make Sure Your Software is Up to Date and Not Taking Up Too Much Room

As our first tip made clear, software can often cause computers to slow down. So you want to make sure all of it has been properly updated. This ensures that it’s running at the proper efficiency and not slowing down your computer.

As well, you want to make sure there’s enough space in your computer for all of the software you’ve downloaded. If your software isn’t taking up much space, the culprit may be temporary data like cookies. You may want to delete these as well.

Perform an Anti-Malware Scan

Sometimes, unfortunately, slow computers are slow for malicious reasons. Malware will often slow down a computer. You should always make sure you have a good anti-virus program on your computer, to protect you from this issue. As well, you want to make sure it’s properly updated.
